If you’re looking to be in good health and if you love being outdoors, then there’s no better workout than hiking.
Hiking is one of those great outdoor activities because it’s a cardio workout, and also builds muscles. Not to mention the positive mental health benefits as well. It’s what I like to call a trifecta workout! Cardio, Strength & Mental.
In general, according to Livestrong, a person weighing 160 lbs can burn between 430 – 440 calories. A 200 lb person will burn about 550 calories. Although, there are many factors that can alter these numbers, this is a general estimated amount.
In short, the more you weigh, the more calories you will burn.
Looking to Burn More?
If you want to burn an even higher amount of calories, try adding additional weight to your pack and/or choose a more difficult or longer trail.
But, don’t go overboard.
If you typically only hike with a light pack, do not go out the next day with a 20-pound pack on your back. That’s too much too soon and your body will pay for it the next day.
Instead, you’ll want to start increasing the weight slowly. Every time you hike add a little bit more weight than what you had before. This goes for hiking distance as well.
Over time you’ll begin burning more calories and you’ll be feeling and looking healthier.
