Difficulty Level: Easy-Moderate
Length: 1.7 Miles (one way)
Location: 8800 S. 46th St. (46th Street and Baseline)
Phoenix, AZ 85044

Javelina Canyon is a quick little escape that takes you away from the city to atop South Mountain. It’s a good trail for those days when you need to escape and clear your head, but you don’t have a lot of time.

Javelina Canyon is 1.7 miles of a gradual ascent to the top of South Mountain. It’s a very clear-cut dirt path that curves around the rising mountain heaps. With every turn you’ll take in the beauty of inspiring new views of South Mountain and leave the bustling city of Phoenix behind you. Deeper and deeper you roam into this trail feeling as if you are in your own world walking between the clusters of mountains. IMG_3504

Once at the top it overlooks other numerous trail and connects to other trails such as Mormon and Ridgeline. Click here for a video of the view from the top.  If you’re feeling like you want to get more of a hike on, then you can continue on Ridgeline Trail to Beverly Canyon, which will take you back to the parking lot (information regarding Ridgeline & Beverly Canyon is currently still in the works).

I would rate Javelina Canyon as an easy-moderate hike. The beginning elevation is 1240 feet and the end is 1705 feet, so therefore you are only progressing up 465 feet of the mountain, that’s not bad! The climb is very gradual and you hardly notice you are accelerating up the mountain.

Directions to Trailhead:

I feel that driving to the trailhead can be a little awkward once you’ve turned onto 46th Street. The reason being is that it looks like you are pulling into a warehouse parking lot – but if you keep going straight the little parking area for the trailhead will emerge.  You’ll first come to a stop sign and then just continuing going straight and you’ll end up in the parking lot area.

This parking lot area gives you access to Beverly Canyon Trail and Javelina Canyon.
