The summer time can be brutal in Phoenix and it’s no joke how dangerous hiking in the summer can be. It’s easy to get cabin fever especially when it looks so gorgeous outside. So if you find yourself needing to get outside and hike then here are 7 tips to remember when doing summer hiking in Phoenix:

  1. Drink lots of water before starting your hike. You want to make sure that before hitting the trail you are already hydrated. Typically starting the day before the hike is ideal.
  2. Bring more water on your hike, then you normally would. You don’t want to find yourself in a bad position and not have water, especially in the hot Phoenix summer heat. This way you can be over prepared and have extra in case you need it.
  3. Do not hike between 10am – 4pm. Either go early in the morning or in the evening. Although the air may still be hot you will be less likely to have that hot sun on you. I would advise to choose a trial you know will be shady. Kiwanis and Telegraph Pass are great trails for the evening. Both will have shade on them by about 6:00pm.
  4. Don’t forget sunscreen. Need I say more?
  5. Don’t push yourself. Take breaks when you’re tired. If you start not feeling well and start experiencing a throbbing headache then it’s signs of heat stroke. At this point turn around

  6. Replenish your salt intake. If you start to feel like you’re losing energy then you may need more salt in your system. Hiking takes a lot out of the body and therefore you may need to consume more calories in order to give yourself the needed energy. Trail mix and pretzels are a great for this!
  7. Have fun but remember to be prepared, stay safe and don’t push yourself.

Happy Trails!
